Birdsell, Ward fight to protect vulnerable children in New Hampshire
Concord, NH – Today, the New Hampshire Senate blocked SB 741-FN, establishing the born alive infant act. The legislation would have guaranteed healthcare for a viable infant after birth. Senator Regina Birdsell (R-Hampstead), prime-sponsor of the legislation, and Senator Ruth Ward (R-Stoddard) issued the following statements:
“This legislation would protect the well-being of a baby and guarantee them reasonable healthcare and the dignity they deserve,” said Senator Regina Birdsell (R-Hampstead), prime-sponsor of the legislation. “A baby who is born, no matter the circumstances of their birth, deserve the medical care any other person would receive. It is disturbing that the democratic party has become so extreme that they cannot take a vote to protect the life of a baby even after it has taken its first breath.”
“As a nurse practitioner, I believe this legislation is a safeguard to guarantee that no baby is denied care after they have taken their first breath,” said Senator Ruth Ward (R-Stoddard). “The main argument against the bill is ‘this does not happen,’ but if this does not happen then it does nothing and there is no harm in passing it. The legislature should always strive to protect the most vulnerable members of our society and there are few more vulnerable than a baby, who cannot care for themselves.”
