The legislation would have guaranteed healthcare for a viable infant after birth. Senator Regina Birdsell (R-Hampstead), prime-sponsor of the legislation, and Senator Ruth Ward (R-Stoddard) issued the following statements:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis legislation would protect the well-being of a baby and guarantee them reasonable healthcare and the dignity they deserve,\u201d said Senator Regina Birdsell (R-Hampstead), prime-sponsor of the legislation. \u201cA baby who is born, no matter the circumstances of their birth, deserve the medical care any other person would receive. It is disturbing that the democratic party has become so extreme that they cannot take a vote to protect the life of a baby even after it has taken its first breath.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs a nurse practitioner, I believe this legislation is a safeguard to guarantee that no baby is denied care after they have taken their first breath,\u201d said Senator Ruth Ward (R-Stoddard). \u201cThe main argument against the bill is \u2018this does not happen,\u2019 but if this does not happen then it does nothing and there is no harm in passing it.
